Self catering, also stay in hostels. I stayed in hostels when I went travelling and it cost loads less, they were clean, fun and full of like minded tourists. Have fun.

Also, look for last minute offers.

It depends on how you get to your vacation and where you stay when you get there. I usualy drive to France from England and stay in rented properties i find on the internet. For weeks before hand i start buying as much food items as i can to take with me. If you think about it a meal in a reataurant in France for 3 costs about $120. I take breakfast cereals and soup packets for lunch which means its evening before i spend any money on food or drink. I get fresh ingredients locally. I also take a cool box with me on days out to save money.

Go to some lesser known tourist places. These places are not on every travel book in the world, thus get lesser tourists and have lower tariffs. Places like Istanbul, Kazakhstan, Peru are some good choices.

Use common sense first to save money, there are surely lots of things you don’t really need and can survive without that you’re spending money around.

Buy your flights, travel insurance, accommodation online. Buy food and water while you are on holidays at the grocery/supermarket, not at vendors in tourist places, they will rip you off.
